What is a Hand-Tufted Carpet?
A hand-tufted carpet is a semi-handmade floor covering created by artisans using a handheld tufting gun. Yarn is punched through a stretched primary backing (usually cotton canvas) to form the pile. It sits between fully hand-knotted rugs and machine-made carpets: it involves skilled handwork but is much faster to produce.
How it is made

A fabric backing is stretched tightly on a frame and the design is drawn or projected onto it.

The artisan uses a tufting gun to punch yarn through the backing, following the pattern. The result can be loop pile or cut pile, and pile height can vary for texture or sculptural effects.

Once the face is complete, latex adhesive is applied to the back to secure the yarn.

A secondary cloth backing is glued on for stability.

The carpet is sheared for even height, edges are finished, and any fringe is sewn on separately.
A typical room-sized rug can be completed in days to a few weeks, compared with months or years for a hand-knotted piece.
